Apr 12, 2024Aldjia Aït-Meddour

This week marks the 32nd anniversary of the Disneyland Paris amusement park. For the occasion, Jia Paris Focus on the Disney princesses that wear their natural curls.

For many years, Disney heroines have often been represented according to very specific beauty criteria, which almost systematically include long and silky hair. This is particularly the case for the most emblematic Disney princesses such as Ariel (The little mermaid, 1989), Beautiful (Beauty and the beast) or Aurore (Sleeping Beauty) which all have long stiff hair.

This observation brings us back many years back, at a time when the hair curly, curled And crepus were invisible and sometimes mocked. Reading these few lines, some of you should probably ask what is the link between Disney princesses and textured hair. The answer is very simple: inclusiveness.

Disney princesses are much more than simple characters of cartoons and animated films, they are an integral part of the Pop culture and are known worldwide. They are especially very admired by little girls who, in their construction of self -esteem, identify with them and wish to resemble them. By showing them only one ideal of beauty, they end up assimilating and believing that to be beautiful, they must get as close as possible to these imposed criteria. It is unfortunately often during this period of their lives that children with textured hair are starting to rejection compared to their hair types. It is also these same children who, from adolescence, will tend to hide or alter the texture of their natural hair.

Luckily, Since the birth of Natural Hair Movement (Movement which advocates acceptance and highlighting the textured hair) about fifteen years ago, more and more people make the decision to proudly wear their natural hair and ask what there is more diversity and inclusiveness in the media so that all types of beauties are represented.

Disney has understood the importance of this problem and has taken this opportunity to dust off the image of Disney princesses.

The evolution of Disney's hair representation

In 2009, the film The princess and the frog Was the light of day and we discover for the first time since the creation of Disney studios in 1923, a black princess.

Almost 15 years after his release, the character of Tiana Always mark the minds because only a few weeks ago a challenge taking up a scene in the film has become viral on social networks: Internet users with textured hair hastened to reproduce the passage where we see her happy to leave her natural hair dropped .

In 2012, Disney hits strongly in terms of inclusiveness with the release of the film Rebel. This is, again, the first time that we have seen a Disney heroine represented with curly hair.

Finally, the icing on the cake: the remake of The little mermaid Released in the cinema in 2023!

For this project, Ariel Make a facelift because she is embodied by the American singer Halle Bailey. It is therefore a black siren, with lockled hair that we find on our screens. CELA has also given rise to several months of controversy on social networks and in the media. This surge is a sad indicator of the path that remains to be covered as to the acceptance of diversity and inclusiveness in the media.
