Hair Myths: What's True, What's Not

Oct 22, 2024Nathania A.

Hello beauties! 🌸 Today, I'm taking you into the world of hair myths : you know, those slightly wacky tips we've heard forever. Some of us follow them religiously, others prefer to ignore them. But then, do all these grandmother's tips really hold water? 🚀 Today, we're sorting out the truth from the lies, one myth at a time! Ready to shake up your curls? Let's go! 💫

1. “Cut your hair during the full moon for fast growth” 🌕✂️

We're starting strong with a mystical myth. The full moon is said to have the power to accelerate hair growth if you cut it that evening. Why? Because, in the same way that it influences the tides, the moon affects our hair! 🌊 So, fact or fiction?

Scientists tell us there's no concrete proof, but some people believe it wholeheartedly. And why not give it a try? It's a chance to experience a little magic. In any case, if you want mermaid hair, nothing's stopping you from cutting your ends while enjoying the atmosphere 🌙✨. After all, sometimes a little magic is good!

2. “Brush your hair 100 times a day to make it shiny” 🪞🪮

Here's a tip from a long, long time ago. Apparently, our grandmothers believed that intensive brushing could lead to shinier, even healthier, hair. But beware, because times have changed, and science has intervened!

Sure, brushing helps distribute the natural sebum from the scalp to the ends, which can actually add a little shine. But 100 times a day?! 😳 It seems a bit excessive, and more importantly, it could cause breakage and damaged ends, especially if your hair is fragile, curly, or frizzy.

My advice: a good, gentle brushing once a day is more than enough! Choose a brush with natural bristles, which respects the hair fiber, and limits excess. Your hair will thank you 🙏🏾💇🏾‍♀️.

3. “Rice water works wonders for hair growth” 🍚💦

This DIY treatment is all the rage on social media, but is it really as miraculous as everyone says? The answer is yes... and no. Rice water is rich in amino acids, vitamins B and E, and antioxidants—nutrients that can actually strengthen hair. By letting it sit (and ferment a little), this water becomes a rich treatment to aid hair growth and strength.

However, it doesn't magically grow hair at supersonic speed. But it can help improve texture, elasticity, and strength.

Just a warning: if you let the rice water ferment for too long… it smells strong. Let's just say you shouldn't be too sensitive to smells! 🙊 Do this once a week for a natural boost! 💦

4. “Olive oil for shiny and soft hair” 🫒✨

Well, this is a must-have grandmother's remedy, and I have to say there's some truth to it! Used sparingly, olive oil is an excellent source of hydration. Its fatty acids help deeply nourish the hair fiber, which is particularly welcome for dry, curly, or frizzy hair.

Be careful, however: too much olive oil can weigh down the hair and give a slightly… oily effect. And no one wants to end up with a fried hair look! 🍟 Use a small amount only on the lengths and ends. As a mask before shampooing, it's a perfect treatment for soft and shiny hair! ✨

5. “Sleeping with braids promotes hair growth” 😴🌱

Now, this is a pretty popular myth, and actually, there's some truth to it. Sleeping with braids doesn't make your hair grow faster, but it can help protect your hair overnight by preventing friction and breakage. By reducing friction, you reduce the risk of damaged hair, so in the long run, it can contribute to stronger, healthier hair!

Also, it must be said: curls the next day with braids are always a great look 💁🏾‍♀️! Any advice? Use a silk elastic or a scarf to minimize friction with your pillow. When you wake up, well-protected hair is already a victory!

6. “Apple cider vinegar for a brilliant shine” 🍏✨

Apple cider vinegar is known for its purifying and balancing properties, and it's true! It helps restore the scalp's pH, remove product residue, and gives hair a natural lightness and shine. But be careful, it's not a miracle solution to use every day.

A diluted apple cider vinegar rinse (1 tablespoon in a large glass of water) once every two weeks is sufficient. It's an excellent remedy for dull hair and an oily scalp. And to avoid the strong odor, rinse well afterward! 🌸

7. “Cold water makes hair shinier” ❄️🚿

Finally, a trick that many people use without really knowing if it's true: rinsing your hair with cold water makes it shinier. Good news, it's true! Cold water helps close the hair cuticles, which helps reflect light and therefore results in shinier hair.

On the other hand, if you're not a fan of cold showers, don't panic. Using lukewarm water at the end of your rinse can also achieve this effect without too much shivering. So, are we braving the cold for glossy hair? ❄️✨

8. “Brewer’s yeast for stronger hair” 🍻💪🏾

The last myth, which could also be true! Brewer's yeast is rich in B vitamins, proteins, and minerals. It helps hair growth, strengthens nails, and improves skin health. Many dietary supplements contain it, and it's an excellent boost for those who want strong, healthy hair.

Be careful, however: brewer's yeast doesn't work miracles overnight. As a complement to a balanced diet, it's a real boost, but you have to be patient to see the results! 🧘🏾‍♀️

Myth or Reality?

So, do we believe hair myths or not? What's certain is that there's always a grain of truth to them. The main thing is to listen to your hair and experiment without overdoing it. And you, tell us in the comments: which hair myth have you already tried, and did it work for you? 😍

Poem

In the mirror, a myth emerges,
This strange myth that seduces us so much.
A myth of full moon and growth,
Another myth of green tea and hope.

Every morning, a new myth told,
This myth of the onion that makes summer cry.
The myth of shaving, hope deployed,
This promising myth that ends up being swept away.

A myth that magically changes our moods,
A myth that makes our hair a symphony.
From myth to myth, we laugh, we get drunk,
A funny myth is enough to revive us.

Hair, a land of myth and dreams,
Where every myth is born and rises.
So one last myth, for the road,
A light myth, which never fears.
