Hair porosity: Understand and take care of your curls

Jul 11, 2024Estelle D.

You often hear, especially in the curly / textured hair community (curly, wavy, frizzy and curly) talk about porosity. There are three levels of hair porosity: low, medium and high. Understanding porosity is important to know how to take care of your hair.

It refers to the capacity of hair to absorb and retain hydration. The porosity of your hair Can influence the choice of hair care products and routines. This can help maintain healthy and shiny hair. JIA Paris products are adapted to different types of porosity.

It is important to know the porosity of your hair. We will explain to you how to determine the type of porosity of your hair. Then you can adjust your routine accordingly.

The different types of porosity

1. Low porosity:

Low porosity hair has very tight cuticles (outer layers). It means that Hydration and hair products find it difficult to enter the hair, but once inside, hydration is well retained .

Features :

- The hair takes time to dry because the tight cuticles prevent hydration from penetrating. The heat can help by opening the cuticles.

- hair products can accumulate on the surface (always because of the cuticles which prevent external elements from penetrating the hair fiber).

- The hair is often shiny.

Recommended care:

Use light products like our hair milk To avoid weighing down your hair. You can use it several times a week.

- Apply moderate heat to open the cuticles without attacking them , thanks to our heated hat which makes it possible to penetrate care ( Intense nutrition mask , oil bath with the 3-in-1 oil synergy ) In depth, in the heart of the hair fiber (

- use protein -based revitalizers such as our Intense nutrition mask , Leave-in conditioner , Nourishing moderately because the surplus of protein can be harmful for poorly porous hair.

- Use our 3-in-1 oil synergy or our Loop defined serum To seal hydration thanks to their nourishing assets. (To make the difference between our synergy and serum, we invite you to read this  article  on the launch of the serum.)

2. Average porosity:

Hair with an average porosity is considered healthy. Their cuticles are slightly open, which promotes the absorption of hydration and nutrients . They hold these elements well, unlike very porous hair. They also retain these elements well, unlike very porous hair.

Features :

- Hair absorb and hold hydration.

- It is easier for this type of hair to find products that suits it.

- Tend to be easily styled.

Recommended care:

Use a balanced range of moisturizers (essential for all hair types but even more for poorly porous hair): Hydrating spray And Hair milk and fortifying (protein -based): Intense nutrition mask , Leave-in conditioner And Hydrating smoothie .

3. High porosity:

Hair with high porosity has very open or damaged cuticles , often because of chemical treatments, exposure to heat, or environmental damage. This makes hair very absorbent but also likely to lose hydration quickly Since the cuticles are permanently open due to the damage caused.

Features :

- Hair dry extremely quickly.

- They are often dry and subject to breakage due to rapid absorption.

- may seem dull and lifeless.

Recommended care:

- Use products rich in oils and butters to seal hydration. (OUR Loop defined serum and and 3-in-1 oil synergy are perfectly suited to respond to this problem).

- Avoid chemical treatments and limit the use of heat.

- Apply regularly Repairing masks and treatments such as our Intense nutrition mask.

How to identify the porosity of the hair

There are several simple methods to determine the porosity of your hair at home.

Water glass test:

1. Take a clean and dry hair.

2. Place it in a glass of water at room temperature.

3. Observe the behavior of the hair:

- Fleet: Low porosity.

- Stay in the middle: average porosity.

- Flow: high porosity.

Shift test:

1. Take a wick of hair between your fingers.

2. Drag your fingers from the tip to the scalp.

3. If your fingers slide on your wick without problem, the porosity is weak. If you feel small bumps or roughness, the porosity is higher.
